Perhaps you've heard of a campaign to reduce plastic waste that is increasingly becoming a major problem for our environment. Not only in Indonesia, but it's a global problem. But the solution to this plastic waste problem, is not with a BAN ON the use of plastic products. In this article, we will explain why and what exactly are 3 effective solutions to deal with the problem of plastic waste.

Plastic Waste Problem Solutions

Starting from why banning the use of products from plastic materials is not the right solution. Products from plastic materials are a need that cannot be eliminated in modern life as it is now because:

  1. Plastic raw materials are easy to form when exposed to heat and pressure.
  2. In producing products with plastic raw materials, it turns out to be more energy efficient than producing paperbags or packaging with other basic materials. It is impossible for humans to live without plastic.

Currently, the handling of plastic waste is still low. Only 10% to 15% of plastic waste is recycled. The remaining problem is that 60% to 70% of plastic waste is stockpiled in landfill and also another 15% to 30% pollutes the environment because it is not handled.

Based on the above problems, the Plastic Community for Good in collaboration with the Plastic Recycling Association (ADUPI) and the Indonesian Scavengers Association (IPI) there are 3 important things to save the environment and utilize plastic for good at the talkshow that took place at Nyi Ageng Serang Building, South Jakarta and the following 3 solutions to overcome plastic waste:

Do 3 R (Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle)

First, according to a researcher from ITB Ir Akhmal Zainal Abidin M.SC, PHD, the concept of reduce, reuse, and recycle is important to do today. It starts with different ways.

"In my house there are 3 types of trash cans the first is for garbage that can rot, the second for recyclable garbage and the third for dry garbage that can be burned. For the category of garbage that is easy to rot, can be buried in the yard of the house especially those who have a garden because the garbage is good as fertilizer. Then the category of recycled waste, can be placed outside the house to be taken by scavengers. While the category of dry waste can be burned at least a week 1 to 2 times does not matter, because it does not smell when piling up, "he said.

Use plastic as money.

Second, ITB Researcher Ir Akhmal Zainal Abidin M.SC, PHD, added that the public must be socialized the benefits of waste in order to become useful additional money or income. Yes, you can just calculate the amount of household waste per family how many kilograms, each plastic waste that is exchanged to a recycling company or scavenger can add to the money debris.

Plastic is not replaced but used.

Third, according to Researchers from ITB Ir Akhmal Zainal Abidin M.SC, PHD, proper socialization is not only replacing plastic packaging products such as bottles with raw products other than plastic but invites people to collect garbage and sell it.

"Yes, in other words, always throw garbage in its place and always sort waste that can be recycled. Do not join the category of recycled waste with the category of waste that can rot because if it ends up in landfill collection, scavengers can not reach it," said Prispoly Lengkong, Chairman of the Indonesian Scavengers Association.
